Spider Pride

The name Bruce Heilman rings throughout the University of Richmond. His influence and presence have been palpable for the last 50 years — especially in signature initiatives through which he substantially increased our endowment and support for our University.

Our president emeritus and chancellor — not to mention our favorite motorcycle-riding Marine — devoted his life to his country and our University. His two stints as UR president — from 1971 through 1986 and then again from 1987 to 1988 — came at a critical time in our history as he led the creation of the Robins School of Business, Gottwald Center for the Sciences, Tyler Haynes Commons, Lora Robins Court, Gray Court, the Robins Center, and, of course, the Heilman Dining Center.

“He was a daily presence on campus, a beloved guest and frequent speaker at University events, and a personal friend to countless alumni across generations,” President Crutcher said. “We will miss the benevolent spirit with which he shaped our campus community for nearly 50 years.”

We are profoundly proud to be part of the Spider community to which he gave so much.
