Women's basketball celebrates 100 years

February 27, 2019

Spider Pride

Throughout the past year, we’ve spent some time reflecting on what it means to be a Spider as our mascot was coined 125 years ago. We’ve honored our milestones, too, including celebrating 100 years of women’s basketball at Richmond. And, what better way to celebrate than beating La Salle during last weekend’s anniversary game — with grads from 1960 to 2018 in attendance!

Since the program’s inception in 1919, we’ve had standouts who demonstrated the drive and tenacity that are truly representative of the Spider Family. From Fanny Crenshaw who brought the sport to life at UR (and coached until her 1955 retirement) to recent stars Kate Flavin, ’05, and Brittani Shells, ’11 — we’re proud to honor these women who proudly wore their red and blue to victory.

Even though we can’t predict the next 100 years at Richmond, we know one thing’s for sure — we can’t wait to meet our future stars both on and off the court!
