Spider Pride

We love it when national news outlets recognize the talent we foster on campus and ask one of our own to provide context to big news stories. Like many faculty at Richmond, leadership professor and historian Julian Hayter is a sought-after expert. We had to keep his recent interview a secret since December, but we’re excited to finally share it with our Spider community.

60 Minutes’ Anderson Cooper traveled to campus to sit down with Hayter, who specializes in U.S. history and civil rights, to discuss the national debate about Confederate monuments. They spent time on campus and walked along Richmond’s historic Monument Avenue. The interview was part of a segment examining questions surrounding hundreds of Confederate monuments standing on public property throughout the country, with Hayter providing historical context.

But Cooper isn’t the first to tap Hayter’s expertise. Richmond’s mayor appointed him to the city’s Monument Avenue Commission, and last summer the Washington Post published an op-ed from Hayter about monuments. He also spent time with President Crutcher recently to talk about his research and Richmond’s place in this national debate as part of Crutcher’s video series, Spider Talks.

What’s amazing, though, is Hayter is just one powerful example of the caliber of our entire faculty and the thoughtful ways in which they’re committed to scholarship, impact, and challenging our students. Just this year, three of our faculty won Fulbright awards, making UR a top producer of Fulbright scholars, and our faculty often win teaching and mentoring awards.

Well done, Dr. Hayter! We’re so excited to see another Spider in the national spotlight!
