New campus shuttles amplify school spirit

Spider Pride

We know Spiders love taking school pride with them wherever they may roam. We see it in the countless photos we receive from alumni and students all over the world holding pennants or donning their Richmond gear.

Our unique mascot is clearly a big draw for students.

This fall, thanks to a student-led redesign of UR’s shuttles, our whole community can now take their Spider Pride on the go as they move around campus and the city.

“They wanted the Spider,” said Natalia Green, UR’s transportation director. “They chose the design and we’re really excited about the updates to our campus shuttles. A strong show of school spirit is important.”

The shuttles are essentially roving billboards for what we love about Richmond. But there’s a great story in the transportation program itself.

Our campus shuttles and transportation routes have long helped connect thousands of students each year to vibrant life just off campus, whether at UR Downtown, in the arts district, for shopping or restaurants. Most importantly, the transportation program has always been about helping get students to internship and volunteer opportunities so they can gain real-world, professional experience that complements their classroom instruction.

The latest upgrade to the campus shuttles also brings another way to stay connected to the world: the internet! That’s right – the shuttles have Wi-Fi now. We’ve come a long way from the mule-drawn carriages used to get around campus in our earliest days.

We love the new look! Go, Spiders! Literally.
