#SpidersWeLove: Jacob Dunbar, '17
Spider Pride
Men’s tennis is having a historic season. Their winning streak — currently at 19 straight matches — is the best season on record for the program. And have we mentioned their star player Jacob Dunbar?
Jacob made history this weekend as the first player to hit 100 career singles wins at Richmond. He had already soared past the school record (…which was 78) a long time ago. Jacob’s now 101–23 overall in his four seasons and 77–12 in spring matches. Not surprisingly, he just earned another A10 Player of the Week award.
He’s been great at tennis since he was a kid. At 12, he was ranked first nationally by the U.S. Tennis Association. Dunbar’s dedication and determination to the sport came with hard work on and off the court. There was a time, he told the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, when he wanted to quit in middle school. Just like any Spider, his record tells the rest of the story.
And it runs in the family — his older brother, Ethan, also played competitively for Richmond. Plus, we have it on good authority that his sister, Emily, who’s coming to Richmond next fall, is just as good, if not better, than her two older brothers who have played for Richmond.
"She’s good. She’s really good,” Dunbar told us. “She’s somewhere in the top 30 of her recruiting class. She was similar, if not better, than me, coming in."
