Men’s tennis and women’s golf capture A-10 titles, men's and women's lacrosse top seeds in A-10 championships this weekend.
Four Spider teams recently rose to the top of the Atlantic 10, joining two others that captured regular-season and tournament titles in commanding fashion. Richmond's six conference championships this school year are its most since the 2006-07 season.
"Winning championships is a tribute to the dedicated hard work and preparation that our Spider student-athletes and coaches have put into their programs,” said John P. Hardt, vice president and director of Athletics. “Championships are not won in a week. They are the product of countless hours of training, of strategizing, of physical conditioning, of visualization, and much, much more.”
Men’s tennis won the A-10 title for the first time since 2006, beating No. 1 seed VCU in the semifinal, and then clinching the championship with a win over No. 3 Dayton last weekend. Cole Brashear secured the winning point. At the NCAA selection show on Monday, the Spiders learned that they will play at No. 13 seed South Carolina on Friday.
Men’s lacrosse, ranked No. 3 nationally, claimed the A-10 regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. They completed an undefeated A-10 season with a 19–10 victory over High Point last Friday. Aidan O’Neil led the charge with five goals, while Gavin Creo and Lucas Littlejohn each brought in five points. Richmond will face No. 4 Massachusetts in the semifinals at Robins Stadium on Thursday, April 30, at 4 p.m.
Women’s lacrosse, ranked No. 23, made program history with a decisive 21–6 win over Duquesne, capturing the program’s first outright regular season A-10 championship. The Spiders completed a perfect 9–0 conference record and earned the No. 1 seed in the A-10 tournament. They will open semifinal play on Friday, May 1, at noon at Davidson College Stadium against a to-be-determined opponent.
Women’s golf earned its second straight A-10 title after a dominant performance at the recent A-10 championship. Spiders placed first, third, fourth, and tied for fifth (with two players) individually, finishing 28 strokes ahead of the field. The Spiders will find out which NCAA Regional they will play in during the NCAA Women's Golf Selection Show on Wednesday, April 29 at 5 p.m. EST on the Golf Channel.
In February, the swimming and diving team won its 17th A-10 championship title, tallying 600 points over the four-day meet and collecting four gold medals, five silver medals and four bronze medals. Head coach Matt Barany was named Atlantic 10 Women's Swimming Coach of the Year for the 11th time in his career at Richmond.
Last October, the field hockey team defeated VCU, 2-1, in a double overtime nail-biter to capture a share of the 2025 Atlantic 10 Conference regular season title. With the victory, Richmond finished the regular season 11-7, and 5-1 in A-10 contests.
“Championships reflect not just successful performance on game day, but the unseen commitment behind it,” Hardt said. “Not only do our Spiders deserve recognition for thriving against championship-level competition, but so too do all of our coaches, support staff, faculty, and administrators who make Richmond such a special place where our student-athletes' potential can be fully realized."
