Three NCAA trips in four years highlight the new coach’s resume as she takes over the Spiders' program.
The next chapter of Spider women’s basketball begins with a coach who has a track record of sustained success. Alisa Kresge has been named the new head coach, University of Richmond Athletics announced Saturday.
Kresge has served as head coach of the women’s basketball program at the University of Vermont for eight seasons and led Vermont to the NCAA Tournament three times in the last four seasons. During her time with the Catamounts, she led the team to three America East conference tournament championships and two regular season championships. Kresge also earned two America East Coach of the Year honors.
“Alisa has won multiple championships and reached the NCAA Tournament while maintaining a strong focus on the academic and personal development of her student-athletes,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics John P. Hardt. “With Alisa leading the way, Richmond is well-positioned to remain one of women's basketball's premier programs.”
“My priority is the team. I am committed to upholding the standard that has been set before me and to developing young women who are not only elite competitors, but exceptional leaders, scholars, and people of character,” Kresge said. “Together, I know we will have a great team that’s ready to compete, sustain success, and build on a legacy of relentless dedication.”
Kresge’s coaching philosophy has been shaped over 15 years, including as an assistant coach at Marist University, her alma mater, where she helped the Red Foxes reach five consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Before that, she starred on the court, earning three MAAC Defensive Player of the Year awards and leading Marist to a historic Sweet 16 appearance. She brings that blend of player experience and development to Richmond.
“There are so many amazing people at Richmond, and this is a great place that gets it on all fronts,” said Kresge. “I am drawn to that holistic approach where academics and character are at the forefront, and I’m excited to support these driven, successful young women and help them grow academically, athletically, and personally.”
Richmond plans to formally introduce Kresge at a campus event in the coming weeks. Kresge was chosen to lead the Spider women’s basketball team following last week’s announcement that Aaron Roussell, who coached the program for seven seasons, had accepted the head coaching position at the University of Virginia.
