What University of Richmond Spiders wish you knew

Campus Life

Returning students and faculty step to the mic to share words of wisdom with first-year students.

As the Class of 2029 began their first few weeks of school, they were busy setting up their living space, figuring out the best route to their classes, and deciding which activities and clubs to join. All of this, along with adjusting to living on their own for the first time. Luckily, the campus has lots of people who have been in their shoes.

Recently, University Communications set up an open mic and a camera near the Humanities Building on Stern Quad to record tips to share with the new students.

“Make time for the things you like to do outside of class,” offered one student. “Say yes to everything.” Another student recommended that new Spiders get out of their comfort zone. “Please stay out of your dorm,” she urged.

Others wanted the first-year students to know that no matter what their concerns, they would always be part of a community.

“Ask for help,” said Stephanie Spera, geography, environment & sustainability professor. “Everyone is here to support you.”
