When you arrived at UR, did you know what you wanted to major in?
I was technically undecided, but I initially leaned toward majoring in computer science. I chose it because I felt pressure to select a practical field that would lead to a financially stable career. After taking my first sociology class with Dr. Matthew Oware, I was completely captivated. That course sparked a shift, ultimately leading me to declare sociology as my major. I wanted to pursue a path that aligned more with my values and aspirations.
What do you hope to do in the future?
My long-term goal is to work in neighborhood revitalization. Eventually, I hope to take on a role in city government where I can help shape equitable and sustainable urban planning initiatives.
What experiences at UR influenced this career direction?
One of the most formative experiences was my internship with the City of Richmond’s Office of Sustainability through the Bonner Scholars Program. It gave me invaluable hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of how urban planning intersects with community needs and environmental justice.
How did you experience personal growth while at UR?
It happened far beyond campus, across three unforgettable study abroad experiences. Before college, I had never traveled internationally. Studying in Berlin, Germany, Cape Town, South Africa, and La Rochelle, France, gave me immersive cultural and language experiences that changed my worldview.
What are your plans for the summer?
I’m working as a research assistant with the Digital Scholarship Lab under Dr. Rob Nelson. I’m also preparing for graduate school and the next chapter of my academic and professional journey.
