How did you decide what your major would be?
I had no idea what to major in. I chose these majors because both of these departments are home to some of the best faculty. During my freshman year, I met with one of my professors Dr. Outka, and she encouraged me to pursue a major in English. I'll also never forget my Leadership 101 with Dr. Kaufman. He was so funny and intelligent. Both introductory courses provided me with awesome experiences, where I could truly see myself growing intellectually.
What is a special memory of your time here?
Throughout all four years, I've been a fellow at the Gary L. McDowell Institute. My favorite memories come from this program. One year, I was at a dinner with a few professors and an author named Dr. Roosevelt Montás. He is a first-generation immigrant who wrote about how the great books saved his life. He urged us to never forsake our passion for intellectual curiosity. As a fellow book lover and first-generation student, he inspired me.
What extracurricular accomplishments are you most proud of?
I was an intern in the Admission office and a tour guide. I've served as senator and president of Jepson Student Government. I've been a McDowell Fellow and a Young Life leader at Maggie L. Walker Governor's School all four years. This year, I've also enjoyed being a member of our campus comedy improv group. Last summer, I worked with a Richmond non-profit called Beyond Boundaries, where I was an adventure guide (rock climbing, hiking, white water rafting, etc.) for people with disabilities.
What will you miss most about UR?
The individuals and faculty that make up the University of Richmond. I've felt like all my close friends and professors have wanted nothing more than to see me thrive, both personally and academically. I've been pushed and challenged, and I believe I've changed a lot during the last four years. This wouldn't have been possible without the people who surrounded me.
