University of Richmond Homecoming Weekend 2024
Campus Life
Homecoming 2024 is around the corner, and there are quite a few events planned to commemorate the weekend.
Spider Day Lunch on Nov. 1 kicks off the celebration. This new tradition began last year and brings students, alumni, faculty, and staff together for a meal in the Heilman Dining Center. Spider favorites, such as Spider Chicken and the Sizzle Salad Station, and desserts, like Jersey Dirt and a special Whoopie Pie Station, will be on the menu. Spider decorations, collectible Spider Day T-shirts, a live broadcast by the campus radio station WDCE, door prizes, and appearances by the men’s basketball team and the spirit squads will help set the mood.
“The Spider Day Lunch is a unique event that brings the entire community together for food, friends, and fellowship,” says Upen Malani, executive director of dining services.
That evening, the festivities continue with Party Under the Lights. The gathering will take place both inside and directly outside of the Queally Athletics Center, which will be illuminated with twinkling lights. Three Sheets to the Wind will perform.
“As America’s number one tribute to Yacht Rock, Three Sheets to the Wind covers AM Gold classics from the 70s and 80s,” said Megan Dooley Phillips, associate director for alumni engagement. “Alums will love this band because they appeal to so many generations and bring an amazing energy to every party.” Registration is $5, and an additional $5 per beverage. The party begins at 5:30 p.m.
“Spider alums and fans can swing by as they’re getting into town or on their way home from work,” said Dooley.
On Nov. 2, the Spider football team takes on the Towson Tigers at Robins Stadium at 2 p.m. The Homecoming Tailgate will feature live music, food trucks and food samplings and family fun outside the stadium. The 502s, an American indie folk band from Maitland, Florida, will perform at 12:30 p.m. The band recently trended on TikTok.
“Part of the Homecoming game will be steered towards honoring our military, since it will be held close to Veteran’s Day in November,” said Melissa Hassan, assistant athletics director for gameday experience & marketing services.
The first 500 students and the first 2,000 fans will receive a free camouflage jersey. The giveaway was made possible through a partnership with Athletics and the ROTC department on campus.
“I think the event will have something for everyone,” Hassan said.
