Now in its third year, the biology photo and art contest drew 21 submissions of subjects near and far. Photographs included monkeys eating peanuts on the streets of Indonesia, coral in the bright blue waters of the Great Barrier Reef, and two lion cubs frolicking in Tanzania.

“Mother Nature paints her own Jackson Pollock!” said one judge of the winning photo, noting that what at first looks like a granite countertop turns out to be swirls of pollen on the water. “Westhampton Lake in April” was captured by George Flanagan, the data analytics and computational support specialist for the provost office.

Honorable mention awards went to rising senior Gigi Cestari, a biology major, for “Great Barrier Reef, Australia,” and David Vinson, motion graphics editor for University Communications, for “Great Blue Heron on the James River.”

“The gallery of images celebrates our love of biology,” said Amy Treonis, a professor from the department, who organizes the annual exhibit.

The winning artworks are hanging on the gallery wall in Gottwald Science Center, and a portrait by biology professor Priscilla Erickson was selected by the judges to also be included in the display.
