Four University of Richmond athletic teams — football, women's golf, men's lacrosse, and women's lacrosse — earned conference championships in 2023, the best collective result since 2018.

Following a win against in-state rival William & Mary, the football team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Playoffs and advanced to the second round.

“It was inspiring to watch the team regroup and rededicate itself after a difficult start to the season,” said John P. Hardt, vice president & director of Athletics, after the team was presented with the CAA championship trophy following the William & Mary win.

Women's golf advanced to the NCAA Regionals in Raleigh, N.C., after winning the Patriot League title. Men's lacrosse earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after winning the inaugural Atlantic 10 Men's Lacrosse title. Women's lacrosse won the A-10 and reached the Second Round of the NCAA Championships after defeating Marquette in the opening round, the first NCAA Tournament win in program history.

With the four teams finishing first in their respective conferences, it was the best year since 2018, when the Spiders won four conference championships, in men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, women’s golf, and women’s cross-country.

“Every time I have the chance to take a step back, I'm astounded by the collective good works of our staff members, coaches, and student-athletes,” Hardt said. “They demonstrate that — even when the odds seem insurmountable — a group of individuals can band together, commit themselves to a common goal, and achieve championship results.”
