Robins School professor Aslan Lotfi was recently recognized by the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges for his dedication to undergraduate teaching. The H. Hiter Harris III Rising Star Award spotlights faculty who demonstrate strong commitment to student success. And Lotfi is described by students as a deeply caring professor who creates a close-knit community in his classes.

Lotfi, a professor of analytics & operations, greets each student by name before every class. He is dedicated to helping students succeed, offering weekend review sessions to accommodate students’ schedules and responding to late-night emails. He proactively reaches out to students to offer help and support, and encourages them even after they graduate.

“Dr. Lotfi’s ability to balance teaching and research while building meaningful relationships with students has set him apart as an outstanding educator,” said Joan Saab, executive vice president for academic affairs and provost. “His commitment to ensuring all students feel seen, respected, challenged, and supported within his classrooms and within our broader campus community is inspiring.”

Lotfi’s current research uses predictive analytics and mathematical models to analyze how digital ads influence the adoption of new products.

“Aslan is the consummate teacher and mentor,” said Mickey Quiñones, dean of the business school. “He is enthusiastic about his subject matter — and that enthusiasm rubs off on students. He is also a world-class scholar.”

Describing his teaching philosophy, Lotfi said, “I concentrate on offering students as much time and support as possible while treating them with dignity and respect. I hope to convey the message that there are people who genuinely care about them.”
