It’s Monday, and Logan Anderson just saw Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban in the parking lot. Brushes with fame are just part of her internship with the NBA team.

Anderson works as a community and corporate responsibility intern at the Maverick’s headquarters and practice facility, set amid the tall, glass and mirrored buildings of downtown Dallas. A rising senior studying marketing, she has never been away from her hometown of Richmond for an extended period before.

“Today marks the start of my third week, but I definitely don’t feel like a rookie anymore,” Anderson said. Her experiences with the Mavs so far include working at events alongside Cynt Marshall, the first Black female CEO in the NBA, coordinating projects for the team’s non-profit arm, the Dallas Mavericks Foundation, and attending a post-NBA draft press conference. “I absolutely love how each day at my job is different.”

Her work week was packed. She had a tour scheduled to help guide middle and high school students through the Mavericks’ headquarters, meeting each department head along the way. The next day, she would assist in creating a living/learning space for teenagers at a local nonprofit that provides safe housing and counseling for victims of domestic violence. Later in the week, she planned to volunteer on behalf of the Mavericks with another non-profit that runs community centers and educational programming in Dallas for children in poverty.

“I think athletes and sports organizations have an important responsibility to give back to the communities that they play and reside in,” she said. “This is honestly my dream job. I want to make a living in professional sports.”

Anderson is a member of the UR soccer team, but a devastating knee injury during her freshman year, along with further setbacks, ended her playing days. Although she medically retired in fall of her junior year, she continues to practice with her teammates and helps out with logistics and travel.

While she’s looking forward to her last year of school and time with the soccer team, she’s inspired by her work with the Mavericks. “I've enjoyed my time at Richmond, but I can confidently say that this internship has made me excited for what's to come after school.”
