Bart Chucker, a 1986 graduate, will always remember Sept. 11, 2001, because four fellow Spiders died that day.

“Their deaths had a profound impact on me,” Chucker said. “It changed my life.”

Two of them were his friends, T.C. Clark and Michael Finnegan from the Class of 1986. They, along with David Brady, a 1982 graduate, and Donald Jones, a 1984 graduate, were killed in the terror attacks on 9/11. Chucker visits the campus every year on the anniversary to see the benches installed in the Gumenick Quadrangle in their honor.

This year, in honor of the 21st anniversary of their passing, Chucker partnered with other alumni to host a memorial concert in Richmond in their honor.

“It’s a way to acknowledge my classmates, who were the greatest guys, and to remember them,” Chucker said.

Chucker and his band played a concert on Sept. 10, in memory of those four Richmond alumni. Bill Campbell, a 1988 grad, joined them that evening, along with other local bands.

Proceeds from the event will help fund the University of Richmond Twin Towers Memorial Scholarship Fund, which honors the four alumni. Each year one student from the New York City/tri-state area is awarded the scholarship. Since its inception in the 2004-05 academic school year, 19 Spiders have received the award.
