Cap toss at 2021 commencement

How UR pivoted to safely hold an in-person graduation

Commencement 2021

When state mandates on graduations and commencements became less restrictive in mid-March, UR Events Manager Alicia Engels guided a team that quickly designed a commencement plan that would allow students to gather on the same weekend and — despite physical distancing requirements — graduate with other students from their schools, with two guests present. She recently explained what it took to put UR’s 2021 graduation weekend together.

What was the hardest thing about planning in-person commencement ceremonies?

The most difficult challenge to navigate this year was our expedited timeline. We initially created a phased approach to graduation based on state guidelines and our physical distancing framework. A month in advance of our ceremonies, the state guidelines eased our limitations which allowed us to completely rethink our plans for commencement. What we normally would accomplish in a year, we did in a month.

Every single aspect of graduation had to be reinvented and thought through in a new and creative light — from ticketing, ceremony format, location — it all changed, but for the better. It’s unlike what we have ever done at UR, but it allows us to celebrate together in-person for the first time since the pandemic began.

We have compiled an advisory group of Class of 2020 alumni to determine the best way to celebrate and commemorate their class based directly on input of what they feel is appropriate.

What was the 2021 version of walking across the stage?

This year graduates had the opportunity to submit photos and personalized celebratory messages that were shared along with their name and degree. It’s special because it allowed everyone to be acknowledged together whether they attended in person or studied remotely and watched from home.

Are there plans for a later 2020 celebration?

We have compiled an advisory group of Class of 2020 alumni through submitted nominations of themselves or others. We will meet following this year’s commencement to determine the best way to celebrate and commemorate their class based directly on input of what they feel is appropriate.

What did you most looking forward to during the return to in-person graduation?

There is nothing quite like graduation day at University of Richmond. Excitement fills the air. Students and families grin from ear to ear. You can feel the pride and sense of accomplishment radiating. It doesn’t get old.
