UR tied for first place in Fulbright ranking

Spider Pride

We’ve shared a lot of Fulbright news lately, but bear with us because the accolades keep rolling in. Among U.S. colleges and universities, Richmond is now one of the top producers of this renowned international award, according to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. We're tied for first with Middlebury College in the bachelor’s institutions category, to be exact.

Three of our faculty scholars were awarded Fulbright grants for 2017–18. Throughout the past five years, UR has celebrated 16 faculty Fulbright recipients!

This time around we’re applauding history and international studies professor David Brandenberger for his research on Russia’s political landscape during the 1940s and ’50s, math professor Jim Davis for his research related to the math behind digital communications, and biology professor Rafael de Sá for amphibian biodiversity research in Colombia.

“Our Fulbright scholars are top researchers and educators in their fields,” said Provost and Executive Vice President Jeffrey Legro. “Prestigious honors like Fulbrights allow them to share their expertise with others around the world, but also to bring their global perspectives here to our campus. Those receiving Fulbright awards are chosen for their academic merit and leadership, and we are delighted these UR faculty are expanding the reach and reputation of the University.”

We’re proud, yet not surprised, to see an increasing number of Spiders included on the Fulbright list. It’s an award bestowed on the best and brightest, after all. Congratulations, Drs. Brandenberger, Davis and de Sá!
